"The Hobbit" Teaser Trailer

It’s been a tumultuous trek for The Hobbit over the past two years. The project was slowly but steadily coming together under the guiding hand of Guillermo del Toro – that is until MGM’s financial blues forced the filmmaker off the project in 2010. Even after Lord of the Rings helmer Peter Jackson finally stepped in to take del Toro’s spot, union issues, funding concerns, and health problems threatened to derail the cinematic return to J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-Earth.

Fortunately, those problems were all eventually resolved and the majority of production onThe Hobbit has now been complete – enough so as to allow for the release of an actual teaser trailer for the Rings trilogy semi-prequel.

For those who’ve never read Tolkien’s source material, here is an official synopsis for Jackson’s film(s):
“The Hobbit” follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor, which was long ago conquered by the dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey (Ian McKellen), Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage). Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers.
Now check out the trailer below:

There’s a pleasantly welcoming and enchanting air to this trailer, which teases yet another imaginative adventure through Middle-Earth. Not only do new characters like Thorin Oakenshield and his fellow dwarfs look like fun (not to mention, possess excellent singing voices), it’s also all the more enjoyable to see familiar faces like that of Gandalf and Lady Galadriel (Cate Blanchett) – not to mention, objects such as the shattered remains of Narsil and Bilbo’s trusty blade, Sting. Plus, the brief glance at the famous encounter between Bilbo and Gollum (Andy Serkis) near the end is enough to send shivers down your spine.

I'm sure I speak for many Lord of the Rings fans when we say: It’s good to be back on Middle-Earth.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey arrives in 2D and 3D theaters around the U.S. on December 14th, 2012.

The Hobbit: There and Back Again is scheduled to hit U.S. theaters a year later on December 13th, 2013.

Sherlock Holmes: "A Game of Shadows" Review

I have just arrived home from the midnight showing of the new Sherlock Holmes film, starring once again the brilliant acting team up of Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law. The film itself was magnificent, a triumph of cinema, a healthy blend of action, suspense and as always with Mr. Sherlock Holmes, mystery.

I do not intend to spoil the plot, however the ending of the film plays out in its own way like Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's most famous Holmes story "The Final Problem". Again I am not giving away the plot, but consider that a giant spoiler for all those who know and love Holmes and his adventures as much as I do.

The cast of the film brings back RDJ and Jude Law, as well as Rachel McAdams briefly as Irene Adler, Geraldine James as Mrs. Hudson, Eddie Marsan as Inspector Lestrade and Kelly Reilly as Mary Morstan. Newcomers are Jared Harris as Professor Moriarty, Noomi Rapace as Sim, Paul Anderson as Colonel Sebastian Moran and Stephen Fry as Mycroft Holmes.

If I were a professional reviewer, I would happily give this film four out of four stars, for brilliant acting, dialogue, intense action, beautiful scenery, and for once again doing justice to the might and majesty that is Sherlock Holmes. After all, it's elementary, isn't it dear readers?

G.I. Joe Retaliation’ Trailer: Looks Better Than the First One

Next summer, director Jon Chu (Step Up 2 & 3) will attempt to craft a better G.I. Joe movie than the one put together by director Stephen Sommers (The Mummy) back in 2009. To combat fan skepticism (which remains on red alert status at the time of writing this), Chu and CO. have promised that their sequel, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, will give the franchise a fresh start, with a better cast, better story and most of all, better action than its predecessor.

With today’s G.I. Joe: Retaliation trailer, we’re getting our first look at whether or not the actual film lives up to all the promises.

G.I. Joe 2 comes to us with mostly a new cast of characters, though the story will continue from where Rise of Cobra left off, in the sense that Cobra Commander (no longer played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is now the masked leader of the terrorist organization, and his crony, master of disguise Zartan (Arnold Vosloo), has infiltrated the highest echelon of the U.S. government, posing as the president. With Cobra pulling the strings of power, and still running lawless throughout the globe, a new Joe force is tasked with saving the day.

Check out the trailer for G.I. Joe: Retaliation below:

As you can see in the trailer, one lure of G.I. Joe 2 is the improved cast - with fan-favorite action stars like Bruce Willis, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Ray Stevenson replacing the likes of Marlon Wayans, Dennis Quaid and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje - and the returning players having been whittled down to favorites like Snake Eyes (Ray Park) and Storm Shadow (Byung-hun Lee). Of course, Channing Tatum returning is something that will still have many haters of the first film groaning -  and it’s fair to say the “hot girl” quotient has dipped a bit, with the addition of Adrianne Palicki and Elodie Young not quite covering the subtractions of beauties like Rachel Nichols, Sienna Miller and Karolina Kurkova. But I digress.

The other thing of note is the action glimpsed in the trailer: Director Jon Chu has made it clear that more practical effects and grounded, gritty, militaristic battle action is his intention for G.I. Joe: Retaliation. If nothing else, this trailer proves we will be getting just that. However, will the change in approach help G.I. Joe 2 stand out as an improvement over its predecessor? Or does the cartoon/comic source material deserve more fantastical representation…say, like, accelerator suits?

I’m sure the Internet will pool the popular opinion of the fanboy masses, after they’ve had a chance to view this trailer.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation will be in theaters on June 29, 2012

R.I.P. Jerry Robinson

It is with a heavy heart, that I must write these words. Jerry Robinson, legendary comic book artist, is dead. He died last night in his sleep, he was 89 years old. Gone now is a man, who left behind not only a great legacy of work, but an even greater legacy in the form of one of the comic book world's most diabolical and insane super-villains, the Joker.

Jerry was hired at a young age by Batman creator Bob Kane to work as an artist and inker on the Batman comic. At 17, Jerry went Columbia University to study journalism. He worked for DC Comics throughout the 1930's and 1940's. And it was in the time there, that he not only created the Joker. Despite much controversy over the years, many comic historians credit Jerry with creating the Joker, modeling him after actor Conrad Veidt in the 1928 film "The Man Who Laughs".

He also gave the world comic first kid sidekick, Batman's crime busting pal, Robin the Boy Wonder. And it was because of Robin, that kid sidekicks became the norm of many superheroes during the Golden Age of Comics (1940's to the 1950's).

Jerry's later career after leaving the Batman family in 1943 is one that to many may not seem all too exciting for one who helped to create the most infamous super-villain ever. He worked on the Batman comic strip for a year, then from 1944-1946, Jerry and his old pal Mort Meskin (another famed comic book artist) created a short lived comic book studio, then Jerry went on afterwards to create the famed comic strip Flubs and Fluffs, which ran during the 1960's in the New York Sunday News.

During the mid 1970's, Jerry was a key supporter in the legal battle between DC Comics and Superman creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. With Batman artist Neal Adams, Jerry drew much support until DC relented and granted lifetime stipends to Jerry and Joe, along with a credit in all Superman works thereafter, both broadcasted and published.

While the man himself may be dead, and we certainly mourn his passing, we may celebrate his life in the work he did during his time working with Bob Kane and Bill Finger. It is because of Jerry, that we now have the most recongizable super-villain ever, and one of the more famous kid sidekicks as well. R.I.P. Jerry, we'll miss you.

The film is set to open April 13th 2012, and all I can say is that come that day, I will be seeing this movie. Others may boo and ridicule it for trying to resurrect these timeless comedy legends for a new era with outdated slap-stick antics, but who cares! I've been a Three Stooges fan since I was a kid, and I'm happy to see my three favorite knuckleheads on the big silver screen once more.

So get out your bald skullcaps, frizzy haired wigs and bowl cut hairstyles, and practice your eye gouges and face slaps, cause the boys are back in town, and they brought a whole lot of Nyuk Nyuk Nyuk with them. Mark your calendars Stooge fans, cause April 13 is coming up fast!

Sherlock Holmes Pictures

Sherlock Holmes is back to tackle his most daunting case yet, in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. The brilliant detective (played brilliantly by Robert Downey Jr.) will be forced to put all of his considerable wits to use, if he hopes to thwart the evil machinations of criminal mastermind Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris).

Along for the ride this time are Holmes’ dutiful associate Dr. Watson (Jude Law), love interest/master thief Irene Adler (Rachel McAdams), gypsy fortuneteller Sim (Noomi Rapace), and Holmes’ brilliant (but lazy) older brother, Mycroft Holmes (Stephen Fry) – who we get our first official look at, thanks to today’s gallery of official Sherlock Holmes: A Game Shadows images.

Here is the official plot for Game of Shadows thus far:

Sherlock Holmes has always been the smartest man in the room…until now. There is a new criminal mastermind at large—Professor James Moriarty (Jared Harris)—and not only is he Holmes’ intellectual equal, but his capacity for evil, coupled with a complete lack of conscience, may give him an advantage over the renowned detective.

Around the globe, headlines break the news: a scandal takes down an Indian cotton tycoon; a Chinese opium trader dies of an apparent overdose; bombings in Strasbourg and Vienna; the death of an American steel magnate… No one sees the connective thread between these seemingly random events—no one, that is, except the great Sherlock Holmes, who has discerned a deliberate web of death and destruction. At its center sits a singularly sinister spider: Moriarty.

Holmes’ investigation into Moriarty’s plot becomes more dangerous as it leads him and Watson out of London to France, Germany and finally Switzerland. But the cunning Moriarty is always one step ahead, and moving perilously close to completing his ominous plan. If he succeeds, it will not only bring him immense wealth and power but alter the course of history.

Now spend some time sifting through nearly 50 images from the film BUT BE WARNED!!!By the time you’re done looking at them all, you’ll probably feel as though you’ve seen the whole movie. While there aren’t any actual spoilers, it may be a bit too much insight for those hoping to come to Game of Shadows with a clean mental slate.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows will be in theaters on December 16, 2011.
